54ᵗʰ International Film Festival Rotterdam
Focus : Timoteus Anggawan Kusno
Timoteus Anggawan Kusno is an Indonesian filmmaker and visual artist whose work critically examines the colonial and dictatorial leftovers through artistic interventions and installations. He has also often speculated and worked with archival materials, found footage, and orphan images. Over the past decade, he has developed a significant filmography that blends fiction, history, phantasma, and memory. He often uses a meta-fictional approach to challenge dominant narratives and the power hierarchy. Kusno's films are characterised by poetic layers, political depth, and technical innovation, often reflecting on collective memory and the mechanisms of "history-making." His work serves as artistic expression and a form of resistance against colonial and totalitarian legacies. He currently resides and works between Amsterdam and Yogyakarta.
